UPDATED: No big surprise in the special election to replace former state Rep. Marie Rader in Kentucky House District 89. The Republican nominee Robert Goforth won the Feb. 27 election 2,809 to 1,399 over Democrat Kelly Smith, of Berea, in a district where voter registration is 2-to-1 Republican over Democrat.
Goforth, of East Bernstadt, put $100,000 of his own money into that race.
He has another $100,000 in the bank for his primary election campaign. McKee Republican Keith Hays also filed to run in District 89. Goforth and Hays will face off in the May 22 primary, and the winner will face Smith in November.
The Kentucky Secretary of State’s office will certify the special election vote March 6, and Goforth can be sworn in any time after that.
